The Digital Agriculture Mission, approved by the Union Cabinet on 2 September 2024 with an outlay of Rs 2,817 crore (central share Rs 1,940 crore), builds the digital backbone for Indian farming. Its core is AgriStack — three farmer-centric registries: a Farmer Registry (each farmer gets a unique digital Farmer ID, like an Aadhaar for farming), geo-referenced village maps, and a Crop Sown Registry filled by a mobile-based Digital Crop Survey each season. It also funds a Krishi Decision Support System and soil profile maps. The goal: faster, paper-free access to schemes, credit, and insurance. The target is Farmer IDs for about 11 crore farmers (6 crore in 2024-25, 3 crore in 2025-26, 2 crore in 2026-27).

Who is eligible

  • All farmers, including tenant farmers as per state rules — the Farmer ID itself is free and voluntary to create
  • In practice it is becoming essential: several benefits, including PM-KISAN instalments, now require your Farmer Registry entry in most states

Benefits

  • One ID for all schemes: your Farmer ID links your land records, crops sown, and benefits availed, so you don't submit the same papers again and again.
  • Faster benefit delivery: cleaner targeting of PM-KISAN, crop insurance (PMFBY), and subsidies through direct benefit transfer.
  • Easier credit: quicker Kisan Credit Card processing because banks can verify land and crop data digitally.
  • Better crop loss support: the Digital Crop Survey records what you actually sowed, which helps in insurance claims and disaster relief.
  • The mission itself pays no subsidy — its benefit is smoother access to every other scheme.

How to apply (get your Farmer ID)

  1. Go to your state's AgriStack Farmer Registry portal (e.g., upfr.agristack.gov.in for UP, mpfr.agristack.gov.in for MP — each state has its own), or
  2. Visit a Common Service Centre (CSC) or a village farmer registry camp run by the agriculture/revenue department.
  3. Complete Aadhaar e-KYC with the OTP on your Aadhaar-linked mobile, verify your land records, and your Farmer ID is generated.

Key dates & status

  • Cabinet approval: 2 September 2024

  • Digital Crop Survey piloted in 11 states in 2023-24, being scaled to all districts
  • Linking of Farmer Registry with PM-KISAN has been phased in from 2025 — deadlines vary by state, so register soon

Common questions

Q: Does the Farmer ID give me money? No. It is an identity, not a subsidy. But without it you may face delays in PM-KISAN and other benefits that now check the Farmer Registry.

Q: Is it compulsory? Creating the ID is voluntary, but many states have made it a practical requirement for PM-KISAN and other DBT schemes.

Q: I farm leased land. Can I register? Rules for tenant farmers depend on your state's land records — ask at the registration camp or CSC.

Q: Does it cost anything? Registration is free at government camps; CSCs may charge a small notified service fee — confirm locally.
