Irrigation & Water Schemes

Reliable water is the difference between one crop a year and two or three. The central government's irrigation push runs under one umbrella mission with two mottos: "Har Khet Ko Pani" (water to every field) and "Per Drop More Crop" (more output per drop). It funds everything from large canal projects and watershed restoration down to the drip and sprinkler system on an individual farm — where small and marginal farmers get more than half the equipment cost as subsidy. Individual farmers mainly benefit through the micro-irrigation subsidy, applied for via their state agriculture or horticulture department.

  • PMKSY — Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana — the umbrella irrigation mission (2021-26 outlay Rs 93,068 crore) covering canal projects (AIBP), minor irrigation and water bodies (Har Khet Ko Pani), watershed development, and the Per Drop More Crop micro-irrigation subsidy: 55% of drip/sprinkler cost for small and marginal farmers, 45% for others.
