Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH)

MIDH is the central government's umbrella scheme for horticulture, running since 2014-15. It covers fruits, vegetables, root and tuber crops, mushrooms, spices, flowers, aromatic plants, coconut, cashew, cocoa, and bamboo. The Centre and states share costs (60:40 in most states, 90:10 in North-Eastern and Himalayan states). Since October 2024 it sits under the Krishonnati Yojana umbrella of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. On the ground, it is delivered by State Horticulture Missions — so subsidy menus and application windows differ a little from state to state.

Who is eligible

  • Individual farmers (owning land or holding a valid registered lease)
  • Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), Self Help Groups, and cooperatives
  • Entrepreneurs setting up nurseries, cold storage, and post-harvest units
  • For area-expansion (new orchard/plantation) assistance, the limit is generally up to 2 hectares per beneficiary, with assured irrigation

Benefits

Assistance is a percentage of official "cost norms" fixed per activity. Headline rates:

  • New orchards, plantations, and vegetable/flower cultivation: about 40% of the cost norm in general areas (around 50% in NE/Himalayan and scheduled areas), typically up to 2 ha.
  • Protected cultivation (polyhouses, shade nets): around 50% of cost norms, with per-beneficiary area caps.
  • Cold storage, pack houses, ripening chambers: credit-linked back-ended subsidy of 35% of capital cost in general areas and 50% in NE/hilly/scheduled areas.
  • Also supported: quality planting material and nurseries, water harvesting structures, farm mechanisation, beekeeping for pollination, and market infrastructure. Exact per-unit amounts vary by component and state — confirm the current cost norms on the official portal.

How to apply

  1. Contact your District Horticulture Officer or the State Horticulture Mission office.
  2. Many states take applications online through their horticulture portals or hortnet.gov.in (HORTNET).
  3. Choose the component, submit documents, and get pre-approval before starting work; subsidy is released after inspection (or through the bank for credit-linked components).

Common questions

Q: I want to plant a mango orchard on 1 hectare. What do I get? Roughly 40% of the official cost norm for that crop, usually paid over 2-3 years as the orchard survives and grows. Your district horticulture office has the per-hectare figure.

Q: Do I need a bank loan? Not for most farm-level components. Cold storage and similar big infrastructure use credit-linked subsidy, which does require a bank loan.

Q: Can tenant farmers apply? Yes, with a valid registered lease as per your state's rules.

Q: Is drip irrigation covered here? Micro-irrigation is mainly supported under Per Drop More Crop (PM-RKVY side), but MIDH projects integrate with it. Ask your district office which scheme applies.
